The Rhythm of Life
by Gaia Grant

"The Rhythm of Life" follows a mother's journey to other cultures around the world to explore some of their family secrets. The journey provides the reader with the amazing opportunity to visit many different countries, and to see for themselves how much less stressful and more satisfying parenting can be in a different environment. It gives fascinating insights into traditional parenting principles which are are more relevant than ever today

For the modern parent, bringing up children is a huge challenge. So many people feel like "novices" when they become parents, not feeling confident in knowing what to do or how to do it. So often the demands on the modern parent can feel overwhelming, and parents often feel torn between their own instincts and the suggested methods and strategies of medical and psychological experts.

In "The Rhythm of Life", Gaia Grant suggests that positive parenting is much more than a practice. She believes that there is not simply a magic concoction of techniques and tools which can be prescribed to solve parenting problems. Positive parenting is, she argues, a principle. It is a whole approach to life that is both purposeful and practical.

This book does not merely give practical suggestions on "how to" raise children effectively. It goes much deeper by considering "why" parenting is significant and "what" we are teaching our children through different child rearing methods. It aims to empower parents to have the confidence to respond to their own parenting instincts, as well as giving practical suggestions on how to do this in the modern context.

By looking to traditional cultures around the world which are still in touch with these principles, we can gain inspiration for how to get back to basics. From feeding to schooling, from toilet training to discipline, every area of bringing up young children is explored.

"I am a mother and an early childhood teacher who after reading your articles in Sydney's Child, was excited to find someone who was expressing the way I was feeling about parenting and caring for young children. I am in the process of reading "The Rhythm of Life", which is taking a while due to my very busy one year old boy, who takes up most of my time!"

"It is great to read your articles in Sydney's Child especially because it reaches the main stream and makes other people think. I love pointing your articles out to explain how I feel about certain issues. I'd love to hear more about traveling with your daughter- we plan to start traveling this time next year. The happiest children I have ever met are traveling children. They seem so wise beyond all their years. Thanks again for all your insights."
