The Reality of Virtual Teams Virtual teams are a current organizational reality. Teams that cover a wide area and multifunctional purposes can have a broad and deep impact, but where the executive team members are separated by geographical distance significant specific problems can easily arise. Numerous studies reveal that the performance of teams whose members are separated by distance is often highly challenged. Difficulties with communication and ensuring common understanding can lead to great tension and impact on the potential for unified performance. This program simulates the unique parameters of virtual teams, and reveals the unique problems experienced by them. It gives program participants the opportunity to develop strategies that can improve individual team behaviours and overall team performance. The main session revolves round a unique activity designed by Tirian, in which individuals in must independently ”travel” around the Antarctic continent to locate core samples (”To the Core” - from Tirian’s “On Thin Ice” program). Throughout this task, the overall team performance must be coordinated and each individual needs to learn to effectively share information in order to reach a common goal. The challenges faced and frustrations experienced in this activity form the basis for a discussion about the issues virtual teams face.
